Grasses

Prairie Grasses once formed the foundation of Ontario's Tall Grass Prairies.

Despite the wholesale conversion of the prairies into cropland, these grasses have not disappeared.

They are being planted at an increasing rate for their attractive appearance and ease of care.

  

Big Bluestem
Andropogon gerardi

Soil: moist to dry
Height: 3' - 8'
Remarks: Monarch of the prairie grasses. The lush green leaves and stems change to an attractive reddish-copper colour with the first frost.

Indian Grass
Sorghastrum nutans

Soil: moist to dry
Height: 3' - 6'
Remarks: The silky-soft, golden brown seedheads lend beauty and drama to any garden. Grows well on any well drained soil.

Little Bluestem
Andropogon scoparius

Soil: moist to dry
Height: 2' - 3'
Remarks: Our most popular grass, widely used in landscaping. This grass turns a bright red in the fall and are topped by fluffy silvery-white seedstalks.
